Yellowknife - May 4, 2026
The NWT's 2026 Emergency Preparedness Week has begun, and this year's Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) theme is "Preparing for Evacuations". Knowing what to do before, during, and after an evacuation can help keep you, your household, and your community stay safe during an emergency
Residents are encouraged to learn about evacuation alerts and routes, and to prepare an emergency plan, an emergency kit and a grab-and-go bag. The GNWT will be sharing information on the GNWT Facebook account all week, and more information can be found on the GNWT's Be Ready for Emergencies website.
Residents are also encouraged to learn about how their community is preparing for evacuations by reading their Community Emergency Plan. It provides community-specific information about evacuation procedures, emergency contacts, and local supports. To find out where to access your community's emergency plan, speak with a local community official or visit your municipal office.
Emergency Preparedness Week is a national campaign that promotes awareness, builds knowledge, and strengthens resilience among Canadians and communities across the country.
This Emergency Preparedness Week, take time to learn, plan, and prepare. Emergency preparedness is everyone's responsibility, and being ready makes a difference.
