Mesa's Momentum on Display in Mayor Freeman's 2026 State of the City

In his 2026 State of the City address, Mayor Mark Freeman reinforced Mesa's strength and outlined a clear vision focused on accountability, opportunity and long-term stability, framed by the principles of being Built on Tradition, Built for Opportunity, Built Together, and Built to Last.

The Mayor emphasized Mesa's continued momentum as one of the best-run cities in the country, highlighting a disciplined approach to growth, strong financial management and a commitment to delivering results for residents and businesses. He credited the city's success to careful planning, responsible financial management and a commitment to delivering consistent results.

"The state of our city is strong, and we're not standing still," said Mayor Mark Freeman. "We've built a foundation based on trust, accountability and responsible growth,and we're using that foundation to create real opportunity for the people of Mesa."

Highlights from the address include:

•Public Safety: Mesa continues to invest in what matters most; safe neighborhoods. Mesa Police and Fire and Medical responded to hundreds of thousands of calls over the past year, whileviolent crime dropped by 14 percent. The decrease reflects a focus on proactive policing, community partnerships and continued investment in first responders.

•Economic Growth: Mesa attracted more than $1 billion in new capital investment and added over 1,500 new jobs added in the past year, driven by expansion in advanced manufacturing, aerospace and logistics. The growth around Mesa Gateway Airport continues to accelerate, reinforcing Mesa's role as a key driver of Arizona's future economy.

•Major Development Projects: The transformation of the former Fiesta Mall site into the Palo District represents a transformative investment for West Mesa. The project is expected to bring additional investment, jobs and energy to the area while creating a regional destination.

•Workforce and Education: Mesa is strengthening the connection between education and employment through workforce partnerships with Arizona State University Polytechnic, Mesa Community College, East Valley Institute of Technology and Mesa Public Schools, creating direct pathways from the classroom to high-demand careers and ensuring local talent can meet the needs of a growing economy.

•Fiscal Responsibility and Affordability: Mesa continues to deliver high-quality services while remaining one of the most affordable large cities in the region. The City maintains strong bond ratings, does not levy a primary property tax and is making strategic investments in infrastructure without compromising long-term financial stability.

•Water and Energy Security: Recognizing the challenges in the Southwest, Mesa is taking a proactive approach to water stewardship and energy reliability. The City is investing in renewable energy and partnering in statewide efforts to protect Colorado River resources and ensure long-term sustainability.
