Consul General Chen Shijie attended Hubei Provincial Peking Opera Theatre Auckland performance, co-hosted by the Hubei Provincial Department of Culture and Tourism and Auckland China Cultural Center on 9 May , along with Waitemata local board Chair Geneviere Sage, New Zealand-China Friendship Society Auckland Branch Vice President Neville Cant and around 2000 audience.
In his remarks, Consul General Chen warmly welcomed artists from Hubei Peking Opera Theatre, noted that Peking Opera is the most iconic traditional drama in China, and also a cultural heritage of the world. Chen pointed out that excellent culture is a bridge connecting people's hearts, and he hopes that Peking Opera can sow the seeds of curiosity and love for Chinese culture in the hearts of New Zealand friends. Chen also introduced China's 30-day visa-free policy for New Zealand tourists and welcomed New Zealand friends to learn about China and Chinese culture.
The performance included famous Peking Opera excerpts such as "Crossroads", "The Legend of the White Snake", and "The Fourth Son Visits His Mother", winning rounds of applause from the audience. Before the performance, a photo exhibition and a promotion of Hubei's cultural and tourism resources were also held.
