Press Release - City of Torrance Celebrates and Honors the Legacy of Former Mayor Dan Walker

Torrance, Calif., December 22, 2025 - The City of Torrance celebrates and honors the life and legacy of former Torrance Mayor Dan Walker, who passed away on Saturday, December 6, 2025, at the age of 85.

A pillar of the South Bay community, Mayor Walker devoted his life to service, guided by a deep love for his country, his City, and the people he served. Following his service in the U.S. Coast Guard Reserve and his graduation from California State University, Long Beach, he began his remarkable journey in public service in 1975 with the City of Torrance as a Planning Commissioner.

His distinguished 27-year career left an indelible mark on Torrance, spanning from his time as a commissioner, councilmember, and Mayor from 2002 to 2006. Notably, Mayor Walker holds the distinct honor of being elected more times and serving longer on the City Council than any other member in Torrance history, an extraordinary reflection of the community's trust in his leadership.

During Mayor Walker's tenure, Torrance remained one of the safest cities in Los Angeles County while maintaining fiscal stability and a thriving business community. His forward-looking vision helped revitalize the Del Amo Fashion Center and Torrance Towne Center.

That same vision extended to the City's public spaces, with the development of Discovery Park, the City's first new park in two decades, and played a key role in bringing the West Coast's first universally accessible tree house to Charles H. Wilson Park. He was also instrumental in the creation of the George Nakano Theatre and the Torrance Art Museum. These landmarks, alongside the revitalization of Artesia Boulevard, Crenshaw Boulevard, Carson Street, and numerous other areas, stand as a lasting testament to his commitment to progress.

Mayor Walker's influence extended well beyond the borders of Torrance. In 1987, he was appointed by Governor George Deukmejian to the Los Angeles Regional Water Quality Control Board. He also represented Torrance as a delegate to the Sanitation District of Los Angeles County, the Southern California Association of Governments (SCAG), and the South Bay Cities Council of Governments (SBCCOG). Alongside these regional roles, he chaired the Ad Hoc Economic Development Partnership and spent 15 years as a dedicated member of the Friends of Child Advocates Board of Directors."

Mayor Dan Walker gave of himself generously and with joy, always making himself available to hear and address the community's needs. His dedication and commitment leaves a lasting legacy and a significant footprint on the City of Torrance that will endure for years to come. Mayor Walker will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him and by the community he so faithfully served.

The City invites the community to view Mayor Walker's Centennial Interview recorded in 2012 as part of Torrance's 100th Anniversary celebration. In the interview, Mayor Walker reflects on his years of public service and shares insights and lessons for current and future leaders.
