SBU Holding National Disability Employment Awareness Month Event Series in October

October is National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM), and the Accessibility for All Seawolves Resource Group (SRG) is hosting the seventh annual NDEAM event series throughout the month to help promote access, equity, diversity, and inclusion through training, awareness, and outreach.

The series honors the impact of people with disabilities to the Stony Brook campus community and raises awareness of disability rights, highlights available campus resources and services, and strengthens faculty and staff understanding of their role in accessibility and accommodations.

All events are virtual via Zoom, and open to the SBU community. Registration is available online.

The series includes:

Introduction to Accessibility
Thursday, Oct 1 at 12 pm
During this presentation we will discuss what accessibility is, the importance of accessibility to members of the campus community, and how to implement accessible practices throughout your department and worksite so that everyone can be included.

Silktide, Other Tools and Accessibility Success
Tuesday, Oct 6 at 12 pm
In this talk, we will present how Silktide, combined with other accessibility tools, can help you succeed in creating and fixing your sites and apps so they are usable for all people.

Accommodation Requests: A Primer
Thursday, Oct 8 at 12 pm
Participants will learn the legal foundations of accommodations under the ADA, how Stony Brook University handles requests, manages ongoing accommodations and best practices for supervisors.

Accessibility Benefits Everyone: Empowering Our Campus Through Digital Accessibility
Tuesday, Oct 13 at 12 pm
Join CELT for an interactive overview of the tools, resources, and hands-on support available to help faculty, staff, and students create seamless, inclusive digital environments.

Healthier U Mindfulness
Thursday, Oct 15 at 11 am
This session will provide an introduction to the practice of Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR).

Inclusive Event Planning: Making Campus Events Accessible
Tuesday, Oct 20 at 11 am
This session will provide an overview of accessible event planning. Participants will be provided with the tools and resources needed to ensure events are accessible for students with disabilities.

Healthier U. Chair Yoga
Thursday, Oct 22 at 11 am
Chair yoga can improve flexibility, concentration, strength and mood. This one hour session will be a guided chair yoga flow.

Utilizing Document Accessibility Checkers
Tuesday, Oct 27 at 11 am
This presentation will address how to read and utilize the document accessibility checkers built into Microsoft Office and Adobe Acrobat, as well as Grackle Docs for Google Docs.

Lived experience Panel Discussion
Thursday, Oct 29 at 11 am
In this panel discussion, peer workers and other professionals will share what they have learned about recovery, returning to work, and creating workplaces where people can succeed.
