The City of Colorado Springs Parks, Recreation and Cultural Services Department (PRCS) will celebrate the completion of the Duck Lake restoration project in Monument Valley Park with a ribbon cutting ceremony on Thursday, Oct. 30 at 11 a.m. at 959 Glen Avenue, near the Heritage Garden.
The restoration marks a major investment in one of the city's most historic park spaces. The project rebuilt the lake with a stone cap and new aeration system, cleaned and restored the original stonework on the historic levee wall, and converted bluegrass turf to native vegetation supported by a new irrigation system. Crews also added four new flower beds and improved access to the Pikes Peak Greenway Trail from both the north and south ends of the lake.
"The restoration of Duck Lake honors the legacy of Monument Valley Park while ensuring it remains a thriving natural and recreational space for generations to come," said Britt Haley, Parks, Recreation and Cultural Services Director. "This project reflects the strength of community partnerships and our shared commitment to preserving Colorado Springs' historic landscapes."
Councilmember Nancy Henjum will join Haley in offering remarks during the ceremony. Community members are encouraged to attend the celebration and see the revitalized lake firsthand.
The $1.5 million project was made possible through funding from TABOR 2B, the Friends of Monument Valley Park, and the Trails, Open Space and Parks (TOPS) sales tax program.
