History Museum’s Flashback Festival Explores 1770s and 1970s

Visitors are invited to explore the 1770s and the 1970s at this year's Flashback Family Festival from 11 am-4 pm, Saturday, July 11, at the Greensboro History Museum, 130 Summit Ave. There will be demonstrations and games throughout the day. Historical reenactors will share life in the 1770s, from packing for a long trip to dyeing fabric. Visitors can place a stitch on a flag, sign the Declaration of Independence, engage in a miniature naval battle, and much more.

Expert flash talks from 11:15 am-12:30 pm will offer 70s perspectives on local campuses and historic sites. The afternoon is full of contests, including 1970s Trivia at 12:30 pm and Name That Tune at 2:30 pm. Young and old alike can dress up as their favorite 70s celebrity or movie, television, cartoon or comics character for a Celebs & Sci-fi Costume Contest at 3:45 pm.

Home cooks can bring in one of four vintage recipes to enter the Flashback Bake Off. Preregistration for the 1 pm Bake Off is required. Signup links and contest guidelines, along with a complete schedule of activities, can be found online here.

Throughout the day, Hot Dog Central or Scoop Zone food trucks will be on site with tasty treats for sale. The Flashback 70s party continues after hours in LeBauer Park with free live music and a movie, Saturday evening from 7-10 pm. Singer Von Newman and his band lead things off with a high-energy 1970s-inspired set featuring classic soul, funk, pop, rock, and R&B favorites. When the sun goes down, it's a chance to settle in for a nostalgic American road trip with the 1979 classic The Muppet Movie. Attendees are encouraged to bring a blanket and/or lawn chair and enjoy a fun night under the stars.

Flashback 70s Music & a Movie is organized in partnership with Creative Greensboro, Greensboro Downtown Parks, Greensboro Public Library and Miriam P. Brenner Children's Museum. The day's free events are part of America250 Guilford County and the Greensboro History Museum's America250 community programming. As the country marks its 250th anniversary, the museum invites residents to have fun exploring the past and reflecting on our shared history. The museum's America250 community programming is sponsored in part by O.Henry Hotel and Proximity Hotel. For a complete list of activities visit this page on the Museum's website.
