City of Cape Town Saves 1,192 Staff Hours with Red Hat Ansible Automation Platform

Automation across 300 systems helps keep 24/7 municipal digital and emergency services available for residents without any downtime

Johannesburg - October 30, 2026 -

Red Hat, the world's leading provider of enterprise open source software solutions, today announced that City of Cape Town is using Red Hat Ansible Automation Platform to cut the cost and time of routine IT operations that keep municipal services running. By automating repetitive work across 300 SAP systems, City of Cape Town has saved 1,192 staff hours to date, shortened maintenance effort and reduced the risk of downtime on the digital channels and emergency systems residents use around the clock.

City of Cape Town shows how open source automation can give a public-sector team both speed and control: shorter maintenance windows, measurable time and cost savings, and a foundation that can grow with service management integration and cloud-native platforms.

City of Cape Town is a major South African metropolitan municipality that serves about 4.7 million residents and employs more than 30,000 people across its workforce. Its public mission centers on being a City of Hope: an opportunity city that delivers quality services and runs as a well-governed, accountable administration. Residents expect online payments, permits and other transactions at any hour, and emergency dispatch depends on systems that stay available when fire, ambulance and policing responses are needed. The same teams must keep today's systems stable while preparing for large-scale modernization, so City of Cape Town turned to automation to reclaim staff time, control cost and protect uptime.

Cost, time and uptime gains for resident-facing services

City of Cape Town deployed Red Hat Ansible Automation Platform after a 14-day proof of concept and a 10-day implementation with Red Hat Consulting, moving quickly into production use. The platform now runs approved, repeatable workflows for patching and day-to-day administration across about 300 SAP systems. City of Cape Town also runs Red Hat Enterprise Linux and Red Hat Enterprise Linux for SAP Solutions, with Red Hat Satellite helping standardize the Red Hat portion of the estate. Local partners support how the City engages Red Hat technologies in practice.

Using Red Hat Ansible Automation Platform dashboard and automation analytics, City of Cape Town reports about 1,192 staff hours saved and hundreds of thousands of rands in savings so far, based on a conservative developer hourly rate. Application and database teams can trigger approved tasks such as backups through the platform instead of waiting on a small operations group, and authorized, auditable workflows give one view of changes from test through production.

Those results feed directly into services Capetonians use. Fewer manual handoffs and more predictable maintenance reduce the chance that overnight or weekend work spills into citizen-facing downtime, which matters for digital payments and permits as much as for emergency-related systems on the same technology backbone.

What's next

Looking ahead, City of Cape Town is embarking on a broader core-application modernization and digital transformation journey. Red Hat Ansible Automation Platform is expected to remain central for provisioning, backup and patching of those newer systems so teams do not rebuild operating models from scratch. City of Cape Town is also exploring Event-Driven Ansible and integration with Information Technology Service Management so automation can respond to IT service processes at scale, and it sees Red Hat OpenShift as a future option for containerized workloads and faster environments for development and testing.

"City of Cape Town shows how open source automation can give a public-sector team both speed and control: shorter maintenance windows, measurable time and cost savings, and a foundation that can grow with service management integration and cloud-native platforms. That combination is what modern cities need if technology is going to keep pace with citizen expectations."

Alderman Theresa Uys, Mayoral Committee Member for Corporate Services, City of Cape Town

"Our residents deserve digital services that are available when they need them, and our teams need tools that make complex infrastructure work repeatable and transparent. With Red Hat Ansible Automation Platform and the wider Red Hat portfolio, we have cut a large share of manual effort, improved visibility over changes and created space for the same people to modernize our core systems. That collaboration helps City of Cape Town deliver on service excellence as we build a City of Hope for everyone who lives and works here."
