Homeland Security Task Force Ensures a Repeat Drug Trafficker from Barren County Spends Two Decades in Federal Prison

BOWLING GREEN, KY - A Barren County, Kentucky, man was sentenced on October 26, 2026, to 20 years in prison for methamphetamine trafficking.

U.S. Attorney Kyle G. Bumgarner of the Western District of Kentucky, Special Agent in Charge Olivia Olson of the FBI Louisville Field Office, and Director Ron Lafferty of the Barren River Drug Task Force made the announcement.

Shane Stuart Wheat, 35, was sentenced to 20 years in federal prison, followed by 10 years of supervised release, for trafficking in over 159.08 grams of methamphetamine. Notably, Wheat had previously been convicted of drug trafficking five times, with three of those offenses subjecting him to increased penalties. Specifically:

On December 9, 2021, Wheat was convicted of trafficking in a controlled substance, first degree, second or greater offense, involving more than 2 grams of methamphetamine.

On September 25, 2017, Wheat was convicted of trafficking in a controlled substance, first degree, second or greater offense, involving more than 2 grams of methamphetamine.

On September 25, 2017, Wheat was convicted of trafficking in a controlled substance, first degree, second or greater offense, involving more than 2 grams of methamphetamine.

Wheat's criminal history made him a "career offender" under the federal sentencing guidelines.

United States Attorney Kyle Bumgarner stated, "Twenty years in prison is a significant sentence which reflects the fact that Wheat was simply determined to remain a drug dealer for his entire life. It is almost incomprehensible that Wheat had previously been convicted of drug trafficking five times yet continued to peddle drugs. His drug trafficking career is over for two decades thanks to the important work of the Barren River Drug Task Force and the FBI."

"The Homeland Security Task Force is working tirelessly alongside our partners to target career criminals and drug trafficking organizations who threaten the safety and security of our neighborhoods, said FBI Special Agent in Charge Olivia Olson. "The FBI will continue to use every available resource to pursue justice for those who think they can operate outside of the law."

Barren River Drug Task Force Director Ron Lafferty stated, "The Barren River Drug Task Force appreciates the combined efforts by working with the FBI to help fight the drug problem in Barren County."

There is no parole in the federal system.

This case was investigated by the FBI Bowling Green Resident Agency and the Barren River Drug Task Force.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Mark J. Yurchisin II of the U.S. Attorney's Bowling Green Branch Office prosecuted the case.

This prosecution is part of the Homeland Security Task Force (HSTF) initiative established by Executive Order 14159, Protecting the American People Against Invasion. The HSTF is a whole-of-government partnership dedicated to eliminating criminal cartels, foreign gangs, transnational criminal organizations, and human smuggling and trafficking rings operating in the United States and abroad. Through historic interagency collaboration, the HSTF directs the full might of United States law enforcement towards identifying, investigating, and prosecuting the full spectrum of crimes committed by these organizations, which have long fueled violence and instability within our borders. In performing this work, the HSTF places special emphasis on investigating and prosecuting those engaged in child trafficking or other crimes involving children. The HSTF further utilizes all available tools to prosecute and remove the most violent criminal aliens from the United States. HSTF Louisville comprises agents and officers from FBI, HSI, DEA, ATF, and IRS, with the prosecution being led by the United States Attorney's Office for the Western District of Kentucky.
