Banjul, 4 April 2026 - The International Organization for Migration (IOM), in close coordination with the Government of The Gambia, has successfully facilitated the voluntary evacuation of 10 Gambian nationals from the Islamic Republic of Iran, as rising regional tensions continue to affect the safety and mobility of civilians, including migrants.
This evacuation marks the first organized voluntary evacuation of Gambian nationals from Iran amid the evolving situation. This is part of IOM's broader commitment to support migrants affected by crises and ensure their protection and well-being.
"This evacuation underscores the importance of providing timely assistance in crisis situations," said Sibgha Ajaz, IOM Officer-in-Charge in The Gambia. "IOM remains committed to supporting the authorities in ensuring safe, dignified and orderly returns for Gambians in vulnerable situations, wherever they may be."
IOM supported the movement of the evacuees, primarily students and their dependents, via Türkiye before the group arrived at Banjul International Airport on 3 April 2026. The operation was closely coordinated and supported by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, International Cooperation and Gambians Abroad, in coordination with The Gambia's Embassy in Ankara.
"The Government reaffirms its strong commitment to protecting Gambians abroad, especially during difficult times," said the Honorable Sering Modou Njie, Minister of Foreign Affairs, International Cooperation and Gambians Abroad. "The coordinated operation demonstrated effective coordination with IOM, ensuring citizens were assisted with dignity and care. The Government expresses gratitude for the partnership that enabled the safe return and pledges to continue collaborating to safeguard Gambians whenever needed."
IOM provided comprehensive logistical and humanitarian support throughout the movement, including transportation from the Iran-Türkiye border, temporary accommodation in Istanbul, medical fitness-to-travel checks, counseling, food and essential supplies, and facilitation of all travel procedures.
The evacuations are a lifeline for many stranded migrants who are unable to leave Iran due to the ongoing escalation of conflict and limited means to move. Migrant workers are among those most affected, having lost jobs, experienced pay reductions, or gone unpaid, with some also suffering damage to their homes - further underscoring the need for organized movement assistance.
IOM continues to receive requests from governments seeking assistance to evacuate their nationals. On 20 March, IOM supported the Government of Bangladesh to evacuate 186 Bangladeshi nationals. The Organization continues to monitor the situation closely and stands ready to support governments and affected populations as needed.
IOM combines its extensive operational presence, capacities in evidence-based programming, and deep partnerships with government and local organizations to deliver lifesaving humanitarian and protection assistance to migrants, returnees, and displaced populations, where resources permit.
