Norfolk Southern Rail Replacement Project Will Temporarily Close Multiple Rail Crossings

Norfolk Southern will temporarily close multiple rail crossings in Greensboro for rail replacement work along the North Carolina Railroad corridor. Work is scheduled to begin Tuesday, September 29, at Wagoner Bend Road and will progress toward Elm Street over several days. Scheduled work is subject to weather and crew, equipment and track time availability and is subject to change.

Crossings will close in the following order: Wagoner Bend Road, Buchanan Church Road, Maxfield Road, Ward Road, O'Ferrell Street, Franklin Boulevard, Lowdermilk Street, Pine Street, Holts Chapel Road, South English Street, Gillespie Street, Dudley Street, and Elm Street. Multiple crossings may be closed at one time.

Each crossing is expected to remain closed for one to five days. During each closure, no vehicle, pedestrian, or bicycle traffic will be permitted through the crossing. Drivers should follow posted detour signs and allow extra travel time.

About the Project

The Carolinian and Piedmont Passenger and Freight Improvements (CAPPFI) rail replacement project is one of nine rail projects funded by the Consolidated Rail Infrastructure and Safety Improvements (CRISI) grant program administered by the Federal Railroad Administration. The grant includes a $105.6 million federal investment into North Carolina's rail corridor, funding nine distinct rail improvement projects. Other partners investing in strategic projects include the North Carolina Railroad, Norfolk Southern and the North Carolina Department of Transportation, bringing the overall project costs to approximately $170 million. The first project replaces aging rail along portions of the Greensboro-to-Raleigh corridor to improve long-term safety, reliability and performance for both freight and passenger rail.
