WASHINGTON, DC (October 1, 2025) - Today, Congresswoman Valerie Foushee (NC-04) released the following statement after President Donald Trump and Congressional Republicans shut down the federal government:
"For months, Democrats have made it clear that we are ready to work across the aisle on a bipartisan funding agreement that prevents devastating healthcare cuts, extends Affordable Care Act tax credits, and lowers costs for working families. But instead of finding common ground to keep the government open, Republicans refused to negotiate and chose to walk away from their responsibilities and from the American people.
"President Trump and Congressional Republicans are driving this crisis. They are raising costs for working families, undermining our economy, and threatening to rip away healthcare from millions of Americans. In my district alone, more than 56,000 families are at risk of higher premiums and nearly 26,000 people are at risk of losing their health coverage if Republicans continue down this path.
"Furthermore, this reckless Republican shutdown will have wide-reaching impacts as it disrupts paychecks for federal workers, delays small business loans, interrupts services for veterans, and creates uncertainty for families who rely on federal nutrition, housing, and education programs. The harm of this shutdown will be felt in every community, all because Republicans put partisan demands ahead of the people they represent.
"The responsibility to end this manufactured crisis lies with Republicans, who control the House, Senate, and Presidency. Democrats remain ready to pass a funding bill that supports hardworking families, protects healthcare, and restores government operations. The American people cannot afford another day of uncertainty and disruption."
