FASB releases 2026 taxonomies for digital reporting

Posted on December 24, 2025 by Editor

The Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB) has announced the release of the 2026 GAAP Financial Reporting Taxonomy (GRT), the SEC Reporting Taxonomy (SRT), the GAAP Employee Benefit Plan Taxonomy (EBPT), the DQC Rules Taxonomy (DQCRT), and the GAAP Meta Model Relationships Taxonomy (MMT). These taxonomies are now available on the FASB Taxonomies page and are expected to be accepted by the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) in early 2026.

The 2026 GRT incorporates updates for accounting standards published by the FASB through to 1 December 2025, alongside technical improvements. The SRT refines commonly used elements not formally covered by GAAP, particularly for SEC filings. Meanwhile, the DQCRT includes a subset of validation rules from the XBRL US Data Quality Committee, geared towards enhancing data quality and regulator usability. The MMT provides enhanced relationship information to support preparers, data users, and rule writers.

This annual update continues to ensure that the XBRL taxonomy framework remains aligned with current standards, preparer needs, and data consumer expectations.
