Rep. Troy Carter Reacts to Trump Cancelling Federal Funding Meeting with Democrats to Avoid a Government Shutdown

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Today, Congressman Troy A. Carter, Sr. (D-LA) released the following statement:

"It has been widely reported that the President has canceled a critical meeting to address the looming shutdown. Make no mistake: a government shutdown would be devastating for the people of Louisiana and for federal workers across this country who serve with honor every day.

"Republicans are playing a reckless game with people's lives. Canceling meetings, canceling votes, and refusing to negotiate is not leadership - it's abandonment of duty. To shut down the government is, in truth, to shut down the American people. It's reckless, it's irresponsible, and it's selfish.

"Democrats remain ready to work around the clock to protect families, keep healthcare affordable, and ensure government stays open. While extremists look for ways to divide and delay, we are prepared to deliver solutions. The American people are counting on it, and I will not stop fighting for them."
