Executive Forum Explores Community-Driven Economic Development

The J. Whitney Bunting College of Business & Technology at Georgia College & State University hosted an inspiring Executive Forum on Monday, Feb. 2, bringing together community leaders from across the state to discuss innovative approaches to economic development through tourism and culture.

The evening event featured three distinguished panelists: Rebekah Snider, executive director of Visit Milledgeville; Trish Whitley, director of Destination Development at Visit Macon; and Denise Brinson, assistant city manager for the City of Suwanee.

Titled "For the Love of Community," the forum focused on how leaders drive economic growth by leveraging cultural pillars such as art, music and recreation. The panelists shared their positioning strategies for attracting development to different cities, offering attendees valuable insights into non-traditional economic development approaches in Georgia.

Highlights from the discussion included Macon's rich music history, Suwanee's unique art showcases, sculptours and community initiatives and an exploration of Trilith, a groundbreaking community in Fayette County that is reimagining traditional development through its connection to the film industry.

The event also provided networking opportunities for students and business professionals, featuring a reception and dinner prior to the presentation. Attendees gained knowledge about aspects of the business world they might not typically encounter while connecting with industry professionals working at the intersection of tourism and economic development.

As Veronica Lively, junior economics major explained, "Events like these give me the chance to learn about areas of the business world I wouldn't normally be exposed to, meet other motivated students and to meet business professionals in Milledgeville."

The forum reflects Georgia College's commitment to creating meaningful learning opportunities that bridge academics and the intellectual capital on campus with real-world business leaders. By bringing together experienced professionals and motivated students, events like these foster dialogue about creative solutions to community challenges and economic growth.
