Library Programs Inspire Curiosity, Learning, and Community Connections

The Newton Public Library has been buzzing with activity, from exciting STEM initiatives for local students to celebrating young readers' achievements.

STEM Grant Visits Spark Student Curiosity

This fall and winter, the Library completed a series of STEM visits to 3rd and 4th graders in the Newton Community School District, thanks to a STEM Scale-Up grant from the Iowa Governor's STEM Council. Youth Services Librarian Phyllis Peter led interactive sessions featuring the "Turing Tumbles," a marble-powered computer designed to teach basic coding. These hands-on learning tools challenge students to solve puzzles and understand how switches send signals, fostering critical thinking and problem-solving skills. The Turing Tumbles will soon be available to check out as part of the Library's STEM kit collection.

Special thanks go to Elementary Librarian Abigail Morgan for her collaboration in making these sessions a success!

1,000 Books Milestone Achieved

Four-year-old Vivian Branderhorst is the latest graduate of the Library's 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten program! Vivian joins her older brother on the Library's Wall of Fame, proudly completing the program with unicorn-themed books as her favorites. To celebrate, she received a readiness bag for kindergarten, along with a keepsake book.

This program, open to children from birth, encourages daily reading at home-one book a day for three years adds up to an impressive 1,000 books. Parents can register their child at the Library or online and will receive a canvas bag and a board book to get started. Learn more about the 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten Program.
