The Underserved Specialties of Military Doctors were designated by decision of the Deputy Minister of National Defence Thanasis Davakis, starting from 3 February 2026 and for the next five years.

The following specialties are designated as underserved for the following five years: Medical Biopathology, General Medicine, Pathological Anatomy, Cytology, Occupational and Environmental Medicine, Internal Medicine, Anesthesiology, Nephrology, Forensic Medicine and Obstetrics - Gynecology.

Those who are successful in obtaining an underserved medical specialty may immediately begin their training, exempted from the obligation to serve a period of command or special service. Additionally, if the spouse of the specialist military doctor who has obtained an underserved specialty is a Member of the Armed Forces and has requested joint service, he/she is transferred exceptionally to the Garrison where the specialist military doctor is stationed.

The Deputy Minister of National Defence Thanasis Davakis stated in this regard:

"Our decision to designate the Underserved Specialties of the Military Doctors aims to increase the demand for these specific specialties from the military doctors, currently in the process of selecting a specialty.

I would like to make a special mention of the fact that the specialty of Obstetrics and Gynecology were also designated as underserved. This confirms the announcement of the Minister of National Defence Nikos Dendias, regarding the establishment of the first Obstetrics Clinic at the Athens Naval Hospital, offering this essential service to our Members and their families for the first time.

We continue with steady steps to implement measures for the support of the Armed Forces personnel and especially measures that support the military family".
