US 278 Grade Separation over CSX Railroad Project Comment Period Underway

Rutledge, Ga.- The Georgia Department of Transportation (Georgia DOT) is hosting a virtual Public Information Open House (PIOH) comment period for proposed bridge construction on State Route (SR) 12/US 278 between East Hightower Trail and West Dixie Highway elevating over planned railroad spur tracks (P.I. 0019253). The virtual PIOH allows Georgia DOT to collect public feedback through May 4 on the proposed project and detour during construction.

The proposed project adds bridges to SR 12/US 278 over the future railroad spurs between East Hightower Trail and West Dixie Highway in Walton County. SR 12/US 278 would be closed in the project corridor during bridge construction using an off-site detour route for up to 18 months. The 7.21-mile detour route uses SR 12/US 278, the Frontage Road along Interstate 20, and Old Mill Road.

All project information and resources including the proposed detour handout, map, and public comment card are available on the project website. Public comments will be accepted through May 4, 2026.

Written comments may also be mailed to:
