Workshop discusses science behind selecting vegetable varieties

Learn about the hardiness, yield and taste of different varieties of 10 common garden vegetables during an in-person workshop in Delta Junction.

Glenna Gannon, assistant professor of sustainable food systems at the University of Alaska Fairbanks Agricultural and Forestry Experiment Station, will lead an in-depth discussion of the ongoing vegetable variety trials conducted at the UAF experiment farms in Fairbanks and Palmer.

From these trials, Gannon and other researchers have determined which vegetables are best suited for Alaska's often-challenging growing conditions. Learn the planting times and methods used during the trials for the best yield results. Each variety tested is commercially available and easily obtained.

The free workshop is scheduled Monday, April 14, from 6-8 p.m. at the Delta Career Advancement Center classroom, 1696 N. Clearwater Ave.
