On 4 February, the Consulate General of the People's Republic of China in Cape Town hosted a trilateral meeting with the South African Police Service (SAPS) and the local Chinese community to address the security of Chinese tourists visiting South Africa, with a particular focus on the Cape Town area. Major-General Bongani Maqashalala, Deputy Provincial Commissioner of the Western Cape SAPS; Brigadier Hanana, Provincial Head of the Serious and Violent Crimes Unit; and Colonel Lourens, Provincial Commander of the Commercial Crime Investigation Unit, were in attendance, alongside representatives from local Chinese travel agencies and the Chinese Community Policing Forum (CPF) in Cape Town. Consul General Ren Faqiang and Deputy Consul General Wang Xiao presided over the meeting.
At the meeting, representatives of Chinese travel agencies and the Chinese CPF exchanged in-depth views with the Western Cape SAPS on the frequent security risks encountered by both Chinese group tourists and independent travelers in the region. In his concluding address, Consul General Ren emphasized the need to further strengthen communication and coordination with the Western Cape SAPS to effectively safeguard the legitimate rights and interests of overseas Chinese citizens. The SAPS side responded positively to the concerns raised by the Chinese community, reaffirming its commitment to working with the Consulate General to build a robust security protection system for Chinese tourists visiting South Africa.
