The Hayward City Council will discuss at its Sept. 15 meeting a potential City ban on development of new data centers in the City of Hayward, City Manager Jennifer Ott announced today.

Specifically, the Council will take up on Sept. 15 a formal request, known as a legislative referral, from Mayor Mark Salinas, Mayor Pro Tempore George Syrop and Councilmember Angela Andrews directing staff to begin the process of amending the Hayward zoning code to prohibit development of new data centers in Hayward in response to "significant public outcry" over concerns about data center impacts.

The referral also calls for establishment of a process for monitoring and reporting on the economic and environmental impacts of construction and operation of data centers previously approved for development or already operating in the City.

Under City legislative procedures, if the referral is backed by a majority of Council members on Sept. 15, City staff would prepare and bring back for Council action at a later date an ordinance or zoning code amendment prohibiting data center development in Hayward.
