Türkiye deploys four firefighting aircraft to support Spain and France

Türkiye has deployed four firefighting aircraft-two to Spain and two to France-to support efforts to contain the severe wildfires affecting both countries.

The aircraft sent by Türkiye are contributing to the broader European response coordinated through the EU Civil Protection Mechanism. In addition to aerial firefighting support, the European Union has mobilised emergency personnel and vehicles and is providing rapid satellite mapping through its Copernicus Emergency Management Service.

President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen said:

"Türkiye has long been a reliable partner for the EU, and you have proved it once again. Thank you for helping France and Spain fight devastating wildfires. In doing so, you are helping to protect lives and communities. For this, the EU is very grateful."

Türkiye has been a participating state in the EU Civil Protection Mechanism since 2016. Through the Mechanism, EU Member States and participating countries pool their expertise and resources to strengthen disaster prevention, preparedness and emergency response.

The deployment reflects the close cooperation between the European Union and Türkiye in responding to natural disasters. This solidarity works both ways. Following the devastating earthquakes that struck Türkiye in February 2023, European countries rapidly mobilised search-and-rescue teams, medical teams, equipment and humanitarian assistance through the same Mechanism.

The EU's Emergency Response Coordination Centre remains in close contact with the French and Spanish authorities to coordinate the assistance provided by participating countries and assess any further needs.

The European Union expresses its solidarity with the people and emergency responders affected by the wildfires and pays tribute to the firefighters and civil protection personnel working under extremely difficult conditions.

Türkiye's contribution demonstrates the practical value of European cooperation: countries joining forces, sharing resources and acting together when lives and communities are at risk.
