TAHLEQUAH, Okla. - The Cherokee Nation has secured federal funds from the Department of Education through the Indian Education Professional Development Grant. This grant secures nearly $1.2 million in federal funding to provide extensive support to an upcoming cohort of select teachers.
The Cherokee Nation ᏗᏕᏲᎲᏍᎩ (dideyohvsgi) Teacher Cohort will identify 10 students via Northeastern State University's College of Education. Along with institutional support from the College of Education, the Teacher Cohort will provide extensive outreach to identified students entering their junior year for the Fall 2026 semester.
"At a time when investment into education seems more critical than ever, I am proud to share we have secured opportunities to help future educators," said Cherokee Nation Principal Chief Chuck Hoskin Jr. "Our continued partnership with NSU is a reminder of our shared mission to maintain accessible and impactful education opportunities."
Students in the cohort will receive advanced support through living stipends, additional scholarship opportunities, technology stipends, professional development and traditional cultural engagement.
Cherokee Nation Deputy Principal Chief Bryan Warner shared his admiration for supporting teachers.
"In July, we gathered with our friends at Northeastern State University to unveil a plan that allows Sequoyah High School students to have direct admission," said Deputy Chief Warner. "It's an honor to continue working with our partners at NSU to provide resources for the next generation of teachers. As a former educator myself, I know that providing stipends and extra resources can be a real blessing while navigating the education system."
Additionally, during the last two years of coursework, the students will serve two years in a local teaching association at schools with large Native populations.
Applications are expected to open in the Spring of 2026. For more information, This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. or 918-453-5300 ext. 5985.
