Statement from Mayor Bowser Opposing the D.C. Taxing Authority Review Act

(Washington, DC) - Today, Mayor Muriel Bowser issued the following statement opposing H.R. 9720, the D.C. Taxing Authority Review Act, which is currently being considered by the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform:

"This would render the District incapable of recovering from the debilitating impacts of COVID, federal remote work and DOGE. A safe and beautiful Nation's Capital can only be sustained with a vibrant economy. While the federal government should not touch the District's ability to raise and spend its local dollars, they can and should help us replace the economic activity lost through reductions to the federal workforce and a shrinking federal footprint-that would help us 'unstick' this period of slowed growth.

"Additionally, there are changes they could make to federal tax law that would promote local growth. The feds can help us attract and retain residents by increasing the childcare tax credit, bringing back the homebuyers tax credit and enacting a bonus depreciation for new construction of multifamily buildings. Among the many ways they could help us drive growth and investment are: expanding Opportunity Zones, enacting a bonus depreciation for new construction of research facilities and being more strategic with tax policy in the southwest federal corridor or with all former federal buildings. Any of those options will have a greater impact on the future of our capital city than the current proposal."
