Blue Mesa Reservoir Boat Ramps Now Limited to Hand-launching

GUNNISON, Colo. - Due to continued declining water levels at Blue Mesa Reservoir, located within Curecanti National Recreation Area, the Elk Creek boat ramp is no longer safe for launching or retrieving trailered watercraft. Effective immediately, all developed boat ramps at Blue Mesa Reservoir are limited to the hand-launching of non-trailered watercraft.

The Elk Creek ramp will remain open for hand-launching. Lake Fork and Iola boat ramps are also available for hand-launching only. Boaters with trailered watercraft should plan accordingly before visiting Blue Mesa Reservoir.

Boaters may launch hand-powered watercraft from the shoreline where conditions allow, but caution is advised because low water levels can expose unknown hazards. Shoreline launching of trailered watercraft is permitted in locations where it is allowed under park regulations.

All motorized watercraft-and any watercraft that requires a trailer to enter the water--must be inspected for aquatic invasive species before launching. Hand-launched and hand-powered vessels that meet Clean, Drain, Dry requirements do not require inspection. The park is deploying waterless, self-serve cleaning stations to assist the public with meeting these requirements. Aquatic invasive species inspections remain available at Elk Creek, Lake Fork and Iola. Decontaminations are available at Elk Creek.

Curecanti National Recreation Area advises visitors to use caution as low water levels can create rapidly changing conditions and expose hazards that are normally submerged. Boaters are encouraged to plan ahead and check current reservoir levels, boating conditions and safety information before their visit.

The Bureau of Reclamation manages dams and water distribution, while the National Park Service manages recreation at Curecanti National Recreation Area. Low snowpack runoff, limited precipitation and warm temperatures have contributed to historically low reservoir levels this season.
