New Brunswick Library to Host Presentation on 1956 Hungarian Refugee Crisis
NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ (September 15, 2026) - New Brunswick's vital role in welcoming thousands of displaced families following the 1956 Soviet intervention in Hungary will be explored during a historical presentation on Saturday, Sept. 19.
Titled "All Those Hungarians: The Hungarian Refugee Crisis of 1956 and New Jersey," the talk begins at 2 p.m. in the Community Room at the New Brunswick Free Public Library, 60 Livingston Ave.
Rutgers University librarian and historian Jim Niessen will detail how the U.S. government established a primary reception center at Camp Kilmer in Piscataway under the leadership of New Brunswick native Tracy Voorhees.
Niessen will also highlight the stories of local volunteers, a student-turned-journalist, and a former freedom fighter who made his career at Rutgers.
