Senator Marshall Supports the Laken Riley Act – The First Bill to President Trump’s Desk

Washington, D.C. - Senator Roger Marshall, M.D. has championed and is an original cosponsor of The Laken Riley Act meaningful legislation that mandates the federal detention of illegal aliens who attack law enforcement, commit crimes resulting in death or bodily injury, and/or are accused of theft and burglary.

This powerful legislation will be the first bill on President Trump's desk under his new Administration. Senator Marshall released the following statement after the passage by both chambers of Congress this week.

"First, I am glad to see this Congress kick off with a huge bipartisan win on this commonsense bill that fights for our communities' safety and security. Laken Riley's murderer should have never been allowed into our country," Senator Marshall said. "With President Donald Trump back in the White House and Republicans in control of Congress, we will make our country safe again by closing our border and putting an end to the invasion we have witnessed at our borders. I am a proud original cosponsor of this legislation and look forward to the President signing this bill into law."

Background:

  • Senator Marshall was a key original co-sponsor for this legislation last Congress and remained an original cosponsor of this impactful legislation in the Senate this Congress.
  • The Laken Riley Act would require U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to arrest illegal aliens who commit theft, burglary, larceny, or shoplifting offenses and would mandate that these aliens are detained until they are removed from the United States so they cannot re-offend and commit further crimes. This legislation would also ensure that states have the standing to bring civil action against federal officials who refuse to enforce immigration law or violate the law.
