Mayor Owens on Local Cops Local Crimes Act

Published on January 29, 2026

Statement from Mayor Sharon F. Owens:

"The Syracuse Police Department remains committed to protecting and serving the people of Syracuse. Our officers will not take on the role of immigration enforcement. I thank Governor Hochul for her proposed legislation that keeps our resources focused on fighting local crime and maintaining public safety.

Importantly, this measure would prohibit federal officers from entering homes or private property without a signed judicial warrant, safeguarding constitutional rights and protecting sensitive locations. These protections matter because they are built into the U.S. Constitution and uphold trust, safety, and dignity for everyone who calls Syracuse and New York home.

SPD will continue to work with federal partners on criminal investigations, but our priority remains clear: keeping our neighborhoods safe and strengthening the bond between SPD and the communities we serve."
