Islanders urged to help prevent summer fires

Wednesday 08 July 2026

Islanders are being encouraged to take simple steps throughout the summer to help prevent wildfires.

The Guernsey Fire & Rescue Service and Agriculture, Countryside & Land Management Services are issuing advice during hot weather to ensure people 'stop the spark'. Often small mistakes can lead to large-scale fires.

Following periods of warm and dry weather, vegetation can become increasingly vulnerable to fire. As such, the Fire Service is particularly focused on avoiding fires starting on the cliffs or in coastal areas, areas which can be vulnerable to fires spreading particularly quickly.

Even a small spark, hot ember or discarded item can quickly lead to a fire that threatens wildlife, property and the natural environment.
The advice focuses on:

  • Fully extinguishing and safely disposing of beach barbecues and embers
  • Avoiding burning garden waste during hot and dry weather
  • Disposing cigarette butts and glass bottles responsibly
  • Storing and managing dry garden waste and hay carefully to reduce fire risk

Les Britzman, Chief Fire Officer, Guernsey Fire & Rescue Service, said:

"Many outdoor fires are preventable. We are asking islanders to think carefully about how their actions could impact the countryside and surrounding communities, particularly during periods of prolonged dry weather. Taking a few simple precautions can make a significant difference."

David Hubert, Agriculture, Countryside and Land Management Services, said:

"Our countryside is one of the Bailiwick's greatest assets. Fires can cause lasting damage to habitats, wildlife and landscapes which may take years to recover. By working together and taking simple preventative measures, we can all help protect these important spaces."

Think before you burn. Think before you bin. Think before you throw. Stop the spark.
