The Times Wins Four NLGJA Awards

We are thrilled to announce that The Times won four Excellence in Journalism Awards from NLGJA: The Association of LGBTQ+ Journalists for work published in 2025.

Lydia Polgreen, an Opinion columnist, was awarded the Journalist of the Year award. In 2025, she wrote The Great Migration, a seven-part series that reframes human movement as the definitive global fault line of our era. Going beyond conventional Western narratives, Lydia used history and reporting from six countries to show that migration is much more than people moving from one country to another.

Greg Jaffe, a Washington correspondent, was recognized for Excellence in Health or Fitness Coverage Award for "The Army Was the Only Life She Knew. Trump's Trans Ban Cast Her Out." The article tells the story of Maj. Erica Vandal, whose Army superiors called her "a superb officer," while the Supreme Court ruled that President Trump could immediately begin expelling transgender troops from the military.

Michael Luongo, a freelance writer based in New York, was recognized for both column writing and opinion/editorial writing for his Modern Love essay "Carrying My New Husband Across the Threshold." The essay shares his story of being engaged, married and widowed to an undocumented man all in the space of a month.

Congratulations to all! Here is the full list of winners.
