Traffic Advisory: Harrison Street Bridge Replacement Project

WORCESTER, Mass. - On Tuesday, Dec. 9, the Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) will begin Phase 1 demolition work as part of the Harrison Street Bridge replacement project over I-290. The projected timeline is below. Please reach out to [email protected] with any questions or concerns.

Tuesday, Dec. 9 - Monday, Dec. 22: Demolition work will take place nightly from 10 p.m. - 4 a.m. (typically Sunday night through Thursday night), weather permitting. During demolition, traffic over the Harrison Street Bridge will be closed at night with eastbound traffic restored during the day. There will also be partial and rolling lane closures on I-190.

After January 1: The existing bridge beams will be removed over two nights and Harrison Street will be closed for a continuous period of about 36 hours, from approximately 6 p.m. until 7 a.m. after the second night. Police details will be in place and pedestrian access would be maintained across the bridge except when the beams are actually being lifted.

Approximately the second week in January: Partial demolition of existing abutments and bridge pier will take place, also nightly from 10 p.m. - 4 a.m. (typically Sunday night through Thursday night) over the course of approximately 10 nights. The goal is to have all phase 1 demolition complete by the end of January.
