Disinformation, Technology and American Society

The Harriet Kenderdine Lecture returns to Millersville University on Oct. 17, when the University College and the League of Women Voters of Lancaster County sponsor a talk by Barbara McQuade, a Michigan Law professor and former federal prosecutor who served as the United States Attorney for the Eastern District of Michigan from 2010 to 2017.

The lecture, which is free and open to the public, will begin at 7 p.m. in Biemesderfer Concert Hall, Winter Center, 60 West Cottage Avenue, Millersville, PA 1755. For more information, visit https://www.millersville.edu/universitycollege/kenderdine-lecture/.

A ticket is required and can be reserved here: https://www.etix.com/ticket/p/44942431/.

McQuade will discuss her novel, "Attack from Within: How Disinformation Is Sabotaging America," which examines the tactics of disinformation, how technology is exacerbating the problem and how it is affecting American society. She will also offer potential solutions to help mitigate the challenges of disinformation in an evolving world.

"Misinformation is a problem in our country that deserves attention and discussion," says Carolyn Hernandez of the League of Women Voters of Lancaster County. "When false information misleads the public, discourse becomes more polarized. With the rise of political violence, understanding what mis/disinformation is and how to combat it is more important than ever."

Hernandez shares the legacy of the Harriet Kenderdine Lecture: "When Mrs. Kenderdine died in September 1982, she left a bequest to the League of Women Voters of Lancaster County. She set aside funds for lectures that the public could attend on behalf of the LWV, underwriting the costs as long as the speaker was representative of their ideals, which include empowering voters and protecting democracy."
