WASHINGTON, D.C. - Congresswoman Sarah McBride (DE-AL) issued a statement ahead of the war powers resolution vote in the House:
"This president has pushed our country into a war of choice in the Middle East based on misrepresented intelligence, changing objectives, and no clear exit strategy. This president is putting American lives at risk and diverting a billion dollars a day from needs here at home in pursuit of a reckless and illegal military operation.
"I am voting for the Khanna-Massie War Powers Resolution because I believe this war is wrong. But regardless of the merits of the mission, the Constitution is clear: the power to take our nation to war belongs to Congress. That safeguard exists for a reason - to prevent reckless decisions that put American servicemembers' lives at risk without a clear national purpose. And now six U.S. servicemembers have lost their lives while Trump's illegal war rages on.
"Everyone in Congress agrees that the Iranian regime is evil; the same was true for Saddam Hussein, but that didn't make military action in Iraq smart or responsible. This Administration is repeating the mistakes of past wars-upending diplomacy, shifting justifications, rash-decision-making, unclear objectives, and no credible plan to protect troops, minimize civilian death, or prevent regional escalation.
"The American people and I are done with forever wars - and our government should be, too."
