TDOT Announces Early Reopening of Gap Creek Road Bridge in Carter County

The Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) announced the reopening of the Gap Creek Road Bridge in Carter County today, one week ahead of schedule. This bridge, located on Gap Creek Road between Big Springs Road and John Taylor Road in Elizabethton, had been closed since January 5, 2026.

"The reopening of the Gap Creek Road Bridge is fantastic news for our community," said Carter County Mayor Patty Woodby. "This bridge serves as a crucial link for Carter County, and its daily use is essential for our residents. After a prolonged closure, it's thrilling to see this project completed. We extend our gratitude to TDOT for their diligent efforts to reopen the bridge for our community."

The Gap Creek Road Bridge was previously closed based on inspection findings and engineering recommendations. During Hurricane Helene recovery efforts, TDOT re-evaluated the structure and implemented a temporary one-lane serpentine traffic pattern for motorists. This non-standard configuration was designed to distribute vehicle loads across specific areas of the bridge until construction could begin.

During that intermediate time frame, TDOT worked on plans to replace the structure and reopen it to two-way traffic. The existing multi-span concrete slab bridge, built in 1948, was replaced with a reinforced concrete box culvert, which will improve safety and mobility for motorists in Carter County.

The project was let to construction on October 3, 2025, and awarded to Southern Constructors, Inc. for $1,780,045.50, with a contract completion date of July 31, 2026. While the roadway is now fully open to motorists, additional work is still occurring in this area. Motorists should use extreme caution as workers may be present.
