Mail theft continues to affect the region, including the City of Rancho Cordova, and RCPD continues to do what it can to prevent it. Although the United States Postal Inspection Service (USPIS) handles the primary reporting and investigation responsibility for mail theft, RCPD frequently assists in these investigations. We encourage you to report all mail theft to USPIS at https://www.uspis.gov/report.
If you witness mail theft in progress, call 9-1-1 immediately. Any information you can safely gather (suspect and vehicle description, license plate, etc.), will assist in the subsequent investigation. We are also continuing to work with the postal service to seek solutions to make mail delivery more secure.
Additionally, you can take the following precautions to limit your exposure to mail theft:
Pick up your mail daily. Most mail theft occurs in the late night/early morning hours.
Important and critical mail should be dropped off inside the local post office.
Utilize USPS Hold Mail. This allows the freezing of mail delivery for 3-30 days. (Ideal for when you are out of town).
Utilize USPS Informed Delivery, a free service that allows you to preview images of incoming mail.
If you are expecting, and did not receive, a check or other valuable mail, contact the issuing agency immediately.
Consider using a P.O. Box, Amazon locker and/or security cameras.
Working in a collaborative effort between our community, the USPSIS, and RCPD, we can continue to make inroads into deterring and diminishing mail theft in our city.
