Washington, DC - Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi announced today that she will not seek reelection to the House of Representatives, after a lengthy career in service to her constituents and our nation. First elected in 1987, Pelosi rose through leadership to become the first and only woman elected as Speaker of the House.
In response, Sierra Club Executive Director Loren Blackford released the following statement:
"When her time in Congress comes to a close, Nancy Pelosi's legacy will be etched in stone as one of the most influential leaders and perhaps the most effective Speaker in American history. Nearly every meaningful piece of legislation signed into law to improve the lives of the American people over the last four decades has Nancy Pelosi's fingerprints on it. She made climate and protection of the environment and public health pillars of her work in leadership and beyond, delivering landmark bills, from the Affordable Care Act to the Inflation Reduction Act and more. On behalf of the Sierra Club and its millions of members and supporters, we thank Nancy Pelosi for her life of service to the people and the planet."
