Ensuring the effective management of the Spanish Insurance Compensation Consortium in relation to the DANA floods

Ensuring the effective management of the Spanish Insurance Compensation Consortium in relation to the DANA floods

18.12.2024

Question for written answer E-003024/2024
to the Commission
Rule 144
Esteban González Pons (PPE)

The devastating floods that occurred in several regions of Spain (most prominently in the region of Valencia) from 26 October to 4 November 2024 have affected millions of individuals and thousands of businesses across the country. As part of the public administration, we must facilitate the urgent monetary support needed. Many of these much-needed payments derive from the Spanish Government's Insurance Compensation Consortium (Consorcio de Compensación de Seguros), a public body responsible for compensating private insurance customers for damages that correspond to extraordinary risks (such as those caused by a natural disaster), which cannot be borne by insurers, and other cases not covered by insurance companies.

In view of this:

What measures can the Commission take to urge the Spanish Government to use the necessary means for the quick, compulsory and effective management of the Insurance Compensation Consortium as part of its responsibility for the evaluation and payment of the due indemnities?
