Part of the Fundamental Elements funding mechanism, the call looks to develop a receiver that will enable vessels to take full advantage of the EGNOS Safety of Life Assisted Service for Maritime users (ESMAS).

EUSPA is seeking proposals for a new EGNOS maritime receiver that, once embedded within a vessel's navigation equipment, will enable the use of the EGNOS Safety of Life Assisted Service for Maritime users (ESMAS).

The first worldwide SBAS service tailored to maritime users, ESMAS augments GNSS to support navigation for SOLAS vessels. In doing so, it facilitates marine navigation in ocean and coastal waters, harbour entrances, harbour approaches s of EU Member States and EGNOS contributing countries (Iceland, Norway and Switzerland), in line with IMO operational requirements in Resolution A.1046.

The requirements

The grant looks to support the design, development, testing, certification and demonstration of an EGNOS-based receiver that fulfils the requirements set by the IEC 61108-7 standard (the standard for SBAS L1 shipborne receivers).

To meet this objective, proposed receivers must be designed to meet the requirements defined in the ESMAS Service Definition Document (SDD).

Applicants are also required to:

  • Execute the laboratory tests defined in the IEC 61107-8 standard and asses the results of those tests against the standard's set criteria.
  • Obtain certification in line with the relevant Marine Equipment Directive.
  • Fully integrate the receiver within an operational vessel and run a demonstration.

Part of the Fundamental Elements programme

The call is part of the Fundamental Elements programme, an EU R&D funding mechanism that supports the development of EGNSS-enabled chipsets, receivers and antennas. Led by EUSPA and with a budget of EUR 43 million (2021 - 2027), the initiative looks to facilitate the adoption of European GNSS, improve the competitiveness of the EU industry, address user needs in priority market segments, and maximise benefits to European citizens.

The EGNOS maritime receiver call has a maximum allocated budget of EUR 2 million, with up to two projects being funded. The maximum EU co-financing rate of eligible costs is 70%.

The deadline for submission is 15 October.
