AAUP Warns Secretary McMahon Against Proposed Accreditation Changes
In official comments submitted yesterday, Todd Wolfson, president of the American Association of University Professors, urged Education Secretary Linda McMahon to reconsider the Department of Education's proposed rule changes.
In response to Trump's April 2025 executive order, the Accreditation, Innovation, and Modernization (AIM) committee at the Department of Education issued proposed rule changes that would rewrite the accreditation process and have a catastrophic effect on higher education.
"Accreditation is intended to be a non-governmental, apolitical process," Wolfson wrote.
As currently written, the rule would politicize a process that has served higher education well and protected the American public from waste, fraud, and abuse. These proposed rules also represent an unprecedented federal intrusion into the autonomy of higher education and will allow the government, regardless of the administration, to interfere with the academic freedom of our nation's faculty, students, and college leaders.
