ATLANTA - State Representative Tangie Herring (D-Macon) has advanced House Bill 1166 out of the Georgia House of Representatives, sending this housing measure to the Georgia Senate for consideration. Rep. Herring emphasizes that this legislation provides a practical and family-focused solution to addressing statewide housing inventory by reducing certain zoning restrictions for small residential dwellings, while maintaining existing local safeguards for communities.
"First, I want to thank my House colleagues for passing this bill," said Rep. Herring. "We are simply removing unnecessary red tape, while preserving the safeguards that protect our communities. This is a free-market solution that gives Georgians flexibility, while maintaining the standards everyone expects, without requiring a single dime of taxpayer subsidy. Now, I strongly urge the Georgia Senate to take up this legislation and pass it, so we can send it to Governor Kemp's desk before the session ends this year."
HB 1166 would prohibit the requirement of zoning decisions related to dwellings of 400 square feet or less in specified circumstances.
As a next step, HB 1166 will head to the Georgia Senate, where it will be assigned to a Senate committee for review. If approved, it will advance to the Senate Rules Committee, which will determine if the measure is scheduled for a full floor vote by the State Senate.
Rep. Herring encourages constituents, housing advocates and local leaders to contact their state senators to express support for this solution to the housing shortage before the bill reaches the Senate floor.
