POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (June 19, 2025) - With the season's first heat wave expected to arrive this weekend and extend into next week, Central Hudson is encouraging customers to take proactive steps to manage their energy use and keep bills affordable.

As temperatures and humidity rise, so does the demand for electricity - especially from air conditioning. This increased demand can lead to higher market prices for electricity, which may impact customers' monthly bills. Central Hudson advises its community neighbors: you have the power to take control.

"Hot weather doesn't have to mean high bills," said Ryan Hawthorne, Vice President of Engineering at Central Hudson. "By making a few adjustments, customers can stay comfortable while managing their energy use and costs. Our customers can conserve energy during hot and humid days by shutting off lights, computers, televisions, and other devices when they are not in use."

Smart Ways to Stay Cool and Save

• Set your thermostat wisely: Keep your thermostat at 78 degrees or higher when you are at home - and even higher when you are away - taking into consideration the health needs of occupants. Every degree counts.
• Block the heat: Close curtains, blinds, or shades during the hottest times of the day to keep your home cooler naturally.
• Unplug and power down: Turn off lights, TVs, computers, and other electronics when not in use.
• Shift appliance use: Use dishwashers, washing machines, and dryers during the evening hours or on weekends when energy demand is lower.
• Keep cool air in: Limit how often you open refrigerator and freezer doors.

These small changes can add up to big savings - especially during peak usage periods.
