Fletcher calls Pensacola training 'springboard' to title defense

Fletcher acknowledged the team, currently fifth, is in a 'tough spot' as the battle for Grand Final qualification ramps up, but described the week-long training block as 'the springboard to success where we can retain our title'.

The team's main training focus was on the 'light air' conditions expected in Dubai and Abu Dhabi and improving their starting strategy - a weakness that has cost them points at crucial moments this season.

"Our starting hasn't been good enough - plain and simple," Fletcher said. "It's a big focus this week, trying to get our playbook set for the end of the season."

Starting is even more crucial in the group racing format introduced mid-season. This split-fleet format 'doesn't offer very many overtaking opportunities,' Fletcher said, 'even though we've been one of the better overtakers.'

Elsewhere, the team are using their precious time on the water to rotate crew members into 'different positions' as expanding squad depth becomes an important focus for the enter fleet.

"We're really trying to claw every minute on the water and it gives us an opportunity to up-skill our young athletes - that's going to be a game changer."

There's less than a month to go until the action resumes; the Emirates Dubai Sail Grand Prix takes place on 21-22 November, followed by the Championship-deciding Grand Final in Abu Dhabi the following weekend on 28-29 November.
