Duckworth to Force Vote Tomorrow on Her War Powers Resolution to End Trump's Unjustified and Illegal Iran War

[WASHINGTON, D.C.] - Combat Veteran and U.S. Senator Tammy Duckworth (D-IL) today announced that she will force Senate Republicans to vote tomorrow on her War Powers Resolution to end Donald Trump's unwanted, unjustified and illegal war against Iran that is costing American servicemember lives and driving up prices for millions of families across the country:

"From the very beginning, Donald Trump has proved that he has never had a plan to get us out of this dangerous, costly quagmire with Iran. But in a few short weeks, our nation has watched the President's incompetence reach new heights after he threatened to destroy an entire civilization, his peace talks with Iran imploded and he launched a complicated blockade of the Strait of Hormuz that is putting our servicemembers and U.S. personnel in even greater danger without a clear strategy or end-state.

"While Trump would rather the American people ignore what they're seeing with their own eyes, it's clear that none of this is making America safer, bringing prices down or ending wars like he promised. Americans are sick and tired of being lied to, and Republicans cannot continue to sit by and abdicate their responsibilities as Trump continues to spiral out of control at the expense of our national security.

"Tomorrow, the Senate will have yet another chance to fulfill its constitutional duty by passing my War Powers Resolution that would put an end to Trump's mayhem in the Middle East. No more broken promises. No more foreign wars. It's time for Republicans to remember their oaths, grow a spine and act on behalf of the American people instead of their own cowardly self-interest."

War Powers Resolutions are privileged, meaning they can be brought to the Senate floor for a vote by any Senator ten calendar days after they are filed. Over the past several weeks, a group of Democratic Senators-including Duckworth-has been forcing votes on War Powers Resolutions to stop Donald Trump's illegal and disastrous war of choice with Iran and reassert the Senate's constitutional role in matters of war and peace.
