Our June employee of the month is Paul Johnson.
Water Systems Manager Paul Johnson joined the city in August 1997 as a Maintenance Worker 2 in the Street division of the Public Works Department. He steadily rose through the ranks, being promoted to Maintenance Worker III in 1998, Maintenance Worker I in the Water Division of Public Works in 1999, and 2002 he became a Maintenance Worker III in the Water division. He was promoted again in 2004 to Maintenance Worker IV, and to Field Supervisor in 2014. Paul was promoted to Water Systems Manager in 2024.
As a Water Systems Manager Paul is the co-operator in charge of the city's water system. He manages, supervises, plans and directs the operations and maintenance activities of the water distribution and sewer sub-sections within the Public Works Operations Division. Paul collaborates with managers in several departments, including the Utility Site & Process Control, Storm Drainage, and Environmental Engineering. He serves as our city's primary representative to the Washington State Department of Health (DOH) on behalf of our water system.
Paul was nominated because in his 25+ years of service he has consistently demonstrated integrity, pride in his work and a selfless approach to his job and co-worker relationships. He is always looking to do the right thing for his work group and the organization. Without complaint, he takes on additional work beyond his call of duty to ensure that the City's best interests are properly handled. Paul is an effective leader because he intuitively knows how to bring the best out of the people he works with. He is quick to look out for others both personally and professionally.
Paul's integrity inspires loyalty and dedication. He has built his career on achievement and teamwork, taking on any challenge without hesitation. As the Water Distribution Supervisor, he pushed to create the construction program at the city, taking on many challenges. His actions are responsible for the growth of the City's infrastructure, saving the city large sums of money.
In December 2025 during the flood, he took charge of leading the crew that saved our storm pump station along I-167.
Paul sees impossible tasks as a challenge. He is currently working on Pump Station #4, an older facility in need of renovation. The work at the site is far more complex than initially anticipated, and Paul was the first person called to handle the job. He wasted no time organizing equipment, staff, and contractors. Paul's success and leadership skills are a shining example of what makes the City of Kent so great.
Paul continuously embraces our values, and we celebrate him as June's Employee of the Month. Congrats Paul!
