Smart Campus Initiative leads digital transformation at UP

The University of Pretoria (UP) is spearheading digital transformation in higher education through a groundbreaking initiative that is set to reshape campus management. Over the past two years, the institution's Department of Facilities Management, under the leadership of Campus Architect Ané Wheeler, has been modernising operations through strategic partnerships and innovation.

"Our vision extends beyond mere technological advancement," Wheeler says. "We're creating an ecosystem where our physical campus seamlessly integrates with its digital counterpart, enabling us to manage resources more efficiently while fostering a more sustainable learning environment."

At the heart of this transformation is the Digital Twin initiative, which is scheduled for pilot launch by mid-2025. In collaboration with the Department of Architecture, Zutari, ESRI and Plans123, UP is developing virtual, real-time models of its physical assets, including buildings, electrical grids and green infrastructure. These digital replicas which will be integrated with the Internet of Things will enable remote monitoring, management and optimisation of campus infrastructure using cutting-edge technology.

The system's capabilities are extensive. For instance, it can remotely adjust building systems based on usage - switching off air conditioning or lights in empty lecture halls - thereby reducing waste and enhancing operational efficiency. Additionally, sensors monitor natural assets, alerting the facilities team when trees need watering or maintenance, promoting a greener campus environment.

The Smart Campus Initiative demonstrates the institution's commitment to innovation, focusing on enhancing service delivery and improving sustainability. It incorporates several key technological advancements, which include the integration of geographic information systems with building information modelling, thus allowing the University to manage and maintain infrastructure data more efficiently and streamline campus planning and development. This will be enhanced with the use of real-time dashboards which can analyse campus operations instantly, allowing for smarter resource allocation and quicker resolutions to any challenges that arise.

UP has already developed digital replicas for its Property Portfolio, Tree Inventory and Water & Electrical Distribution systems. The water management system, equipped with water meters for leak detection, exemplifies how this technology prevents disruptions and ensures efficient resource usage.

Through this pioneering initiative, UP is establishing itself as a leader in the global education landscape, implementing technologies that create smarter, greener and more responsive campuses. This forward-thinking approach to digital transformation ensures that the institution remains at the forefront of shaping the future of education and campus life.
