Kennedy Statement on Ending of Canada Trade Talks

Congressman Tim Kennedy, Co-Chair of the Northern Border Caucus, released the following statement in response to President Donald Trump's announcement that the United States will end all trade talks with Canada:

"President Trump's impulsive decision to end trade discussions with Canada shows how unserious he is about fixing our broken economy and making life more affordable for all Americans. This move will have devastating consequences for our economy, our workers, and our northern border communities, including right here in Western New York.

"Canada is one of our closest allies and largest trading partners. In northern border communities like mine, trade and tourism are a lifeline for jobs and local businesses. President Trump's senseless trade war and constant insults against Canada are destroying that relationship, weakening our economy, and hurting Americans across the country. As families struggle with the skyrocketing cost of living, we need smart, strategic economic policy, not presidential temper tantrums that create instability and uncertainty."

"Only Congress has the constitutional authority to impose tariffs, and the Supreme Court now has an opportunity to make that clear to this president who continues to disregard the rule of law. It is time for Congressional Republicans to stop bending the knee to this out-of-control president and stand up for their constituents by rescinding these tariffs that are tearing apart our nation's economy."
