Gilbert, Ariz. - As summer continues, families seek pools, lakes, and rivers for some fun and heat relief. While these moments create unforgettable memories, they also pose significant dangers. Tragically, too many children die each year in water-related accidents, many of which could have been prevented.
Drowning continues to be a leading cause of death in children, particularly those under 5 years old. This year alone, the Gilbert Fire & Rescue Department has responded to eight water-related emergencies that resulted in one pediatric and one adult fatality.
TheCenters for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports an average of 22 nonfatal drownings daily, which while not always fatal, can result in lasting effects such as brain injury and physical disabilities.
During National Drowning Prevention Week 2025 (July 20-26), GFRD reminds us that water safety is a shared responsibility.
Here's how you can keep kids safe by following the ABCD's of Water Safety.
Adult Supervision: Stay alert and within arm's reach whenever children are near water.
Barriers: This can include a fence with a self-closing, self-latching gate, door locks that children are unable to reach, and door alarms.
Classes: Teach kids to swim early.
Devices: Coast Guard approved devices such as life vests are encouraged for those who cannot swim.
A child can drown in as little as two inches of water. GFRD offers additional tips to keep your loved ones safe.
Empty inflatable pools, buckets, and tubs after use
Never leave a child alone in the tub, even for a second
Close toilet lids after use
Keep bathroom doors closed
If you find a child or any person involved in a water-related incident, do the following:
Yell for help and pull the child out of the water
Call 911 immediately
Begin CPR if you have had training
If you are not trained to administer CPR, follow the instructions from the operator until help arrives.
