North Carolina Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey today announced the arrest of Shaqura Tyeisha Cobb, 34, of 730 Gateway Park Drive, Raleigh. Cobb was charged with three counts of embezzlement and three counts of obtaining property by false pretense, all felonies.
Special agents with the Department of Insurance's Criminal Investigations Division accuse Cobb, a licensed bail bond agent, of obtaining bail bond premiums totaling $13,300 from three different jail inmates and keeping the money instead of bailing the inmates out of jail.
According to arrest warrants, two of the inmates were in the Wake County Detention Center. The other was in the Franklin County Detention Center.
The offenses occurred between June 25, 2024, and Aug. 27, 2024.
Cobb was arrested on Jan. 5 and given secured bonds totaling $6,000.
The investigation is ongoing. The Department of Insurance has received multiple complaints regarding Ms. Cobb. She usually operates in the Wake County area but is licensed statewide.
The Department is asking people who have further complaints to contact the Bail Bond Regulatory division at 919-807-6850 or the Criminal Investigations Division at 919-807-6840.
"Bail bond agents hold a position of trust and must be held to a high standard," Commissioner Causey said. "I comment our special agents and Bail Bond Regulation Division for their efforts in upholding that standard and resolving this issue.
