The Chicago Headline Club recently announced the winners of the 48th annual Peter Lisagor Awards, honoring excellence in journalism across Illinois and northwest Indiana. Columbia College Chicago's student-run publication, "The Columbia Chronicle," received the award for Best Campus Coverage by Student Journalists. In addition to this win, the "Chronicle" was named a finalist in the Best Email Newsletter category.
"The Lisagors are the top Chicago journalism honors," says Jackie Spinner, faculty advisor for the 'Chronicle' and a professor in the School of Communication and Culture.
The student team behind the Best Campus Coverage win included Patience Hurston, Vivian Richey, Araceli Ramirez, and Doreen Abril Albuerne-Rodriguez.
"The students' important coverage of the college's financial challenges was done professionally and accurately," Spinner says. "Even as students, they produce high-level journalism, and that's something we are very proud of at the 'Chronicle'."
The "Chronicle's" "Cafecito con La Crónica," led by then-editor Doreen Abril Albuerne-Rodriguez, was recognized in the Best Email Newsletter category, competing with professional outlets "Axios Chicago" and "Politco."
"It's fantastic to see the 'Chronicle's' Spanish-language newsletter as a finalist with two of the best professional news outlets in Chicago," says Spinner.
"Both 'Axios' and 'Politico' are known for their newsletter content. Being a finalist with the Spanish newsletter is really a recognition of the inclusive coverage the Chronicle has tried to provide with La Crónica since 2023," she says.
Congratulations to all the students recognized at this year's Peter Lisagor Awards!
