Notice of City Council Member Vacancies and Application Process
The City of Pontiac is looking to fill current City Council Member Vacancies. Please review the following application process below:
Ward Four - one seat open to fill a 2-year unexpired term: through May 3, 2027.
Qualifications: Applicants must be a qualified elector of the City and shall have lived in respective Ward for one year preceding their appointment.
Application period: Monday, November 3 through Friday, November 21 or until filled.
The role of Alderman is to represent the citizens of their ward. Together, they form the legislative body responsible for enacting ordinances, resolutions and policies that govern the City.
The following list of Council responsibilities is a representation of duties for Pontiac City Alderpersons and is intended to present a general idea of the time commitment needed for this position.
Regular Council Meetings: Held the 1st & 3rd Monday of each month, beginning at 7:00 p.m. Council packets are made available the Friday before each meeting. These packets contain the agenda for the meeting, detailed information for each agenda item, and other information for Council to review.
Council Committees/Workshops: Alderpersons will be appointed to, at a minimum, two sub committees. Those committees will meet on a bi-monthly schedule, or as needed, to address topics requiring more in-depth discussion or added attention. Additionally, the entire Council will have workshops when there is more thorough discussion needed for a topic. Annual budget preparation requires more frequent workshops primarily during February-March.
Other Meetings/Conferences: Council has the opportunity to become involved in education and training opportunities. The Illinois Municipal League hosts an annual conference, and sponsors continuing education programs for elected officials.
